The Story Behind Fatshu Epis
Fatshu Epis is my tribute to my mother’s love, wisdom, and the culinary legacy she passed down to me. I remember our kitchen filled with the bright aroma of fresh herbs, garlic sizzling in the pan, and the fiery scent of peppers—spices that made the air dance. I would sit on a stool at the counter, watching her hands move with precision and care, selecting, chopping, and blending each ingredient with decades of practice. Each jar of epis she made carried more than flavor; it carried love, family, and the heart of our home. She often reminded me, quoting Lamentations 3:26: “It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.” Her faith, patience, and gentle guidance were as much a part of the recipe as the ingredients themselves.
I learned more than just how to make epis. I learned how food can tell a story, connect generations, and hold memories in every bite. I remember sneaking tastes from the mortar, the bold flavors waking my senses, and her laughing as she shook her head at me. I remember her humming softly, sharing little lessons—not just about cooking, but about life, love, and the importance of care in everything we do.
When she went to be with the Lord, I felt the weight of continuing her tradition, but I knew it was my honor. I refined her recipe, staying true to her heart and spirit, so that every jar of Fatshu Epis carries her memory, her love, and the countless lessons she taught me.
Today, I continue to blend fresh ingredients and bold Haitian spices, bringing that same warmth, care, and authenticity into your kitchen. Taste it once, and you’ll understand why I say
“Goute l yon fwa, mande l tout tan.”
(Taste it once, ask for it all the time.)
The Meaning of Epis
Epis is more than just seasoning — it’s the heart of Haitian cooking. Made from a blend of fresh herbs, garlic, onions, peppers, and spices, epis serves as the flavorful base for nearly every Haitian dish. From stews and rice to meats and marinades, it transforms simple ingredients into meals rich with depth and tradition.
For generations, families across Haiti have created their own version of epis, each recipe reflecting their unique touch and regional flavor. At Fatshu Epis, we honor that legacy — preserving the essence of our heritage while sharing its bold, homemade taste with kitchens everywhere.
Epis is flavor, culture, and connection — all in one jar.
